Objectives: Body painting is an engaging, experiential approach for students to learn surface anatomy and physical examination skills that are important for future health professionals. Students learn anatomy through observation, identification of surface features, palpation, drawing and painting. The focus is on the “process”, rather than the finished product, thus encouraging inclusion.
Methods: A total of 16 body painting projects were carried-out to show the skeletal system, the muscular system, pregnancy, various body systems and the neurovascular systems of the entire body. completed by a “student team” of first year anatomy students, comprising 4 – 5 artists, a photographer and a model painted from head to foot over 24 hours.
Results: The body painting work has been publicised widely in the Australian media and worldwide and has received almost half a million views on YouTube. An Art Exhibition will run in Albury, October, 2023 and will be a celebration of the engaging, innovative body painting carried out by anatomy students, demonstrating how scholarly activity can have a significant positive impact on student learning and success. The exhibition will be an excellent opportunity to share this work with the community and enthuse local students to consider studying health professions in the future.
Conclusion: This work strives to make a difference by empowering students through innovative education, and helping them to make a difference. Holding the Art exhibition in Albury will be positive in our social responsibility of making connections with our regional community, and ultimately our global community. It is expected that the local media will provide positive promotion and publicity.
